Roommates to Independence
(Image: Alexa and Kelly)
Our Housing Navigators spoke with Alexa and Kelly. These two ladies moved into a new building in Ottawa a couple of months ago after living together for 10 years as housemates in a home that their parents had created. The option to move into this new building was made possible by the City of Ottawa and Ottawa Community Housing, who gave priority for 10 eligible people with a developmental disability the opportunity to have their own lease and live in this beautiful new building.

Watch this video to discover the journey of Kelly and Alexa, who now live in their own apartment, and to hear some tips on what makes a good roommate.

According to Kelly's mother, they have changed since they have moved into their own apartments.

They both took this opportunity very seriously and wanted to succeed.

Now, they are excelling, and they have gone beyond what was expected of both of them.
They are positive, independent, and engaging with their community.

A piece of advice from Kelly's mother for other parents is to never see any limitation. Never close any door. Keep them all open.

Ausome Ottawa announced it's shutting down, the second non-profit in a short period of time, after Thinking in Pictures Educational Services announced its sudden closure
(Image: News anchor)
"This year to date, Ausome has received half of the funding it received in the same period last year. That's simply not enough β€” not even close. With inflation making the cost to operate more expensive and charitable giving to small charities on the decline, we can't see a path forward," co-founder Liisa Vexler wrote.

"It really puts parents and their kids in a difficult position. The waitlist situation is almost impossible to quantify because the waitlists are for activities, for programming, for support programs.

Ausome Ottawa is the second organization to announce its closure within a week. Thinking in Pictures Educational Services announced its sudden closure on Friday."
There's still time to find Summer Camps for Children
(Image: Summer Camps banner)
There are still places available at some camps!

Summer camps offer the opportunity to participate in a variety of programs, such as summer sports (like horseback riding), science, arts, and more! Summer camps offer unique opportunities for growth.

At SCS, we can help families explore summer camp options that may be of interest to them. To that end, each year we create a list of summer camps that families can use to find out which camps meet their needs and to get more information.

You can view the list of summer camps here
