Meet George, a Participant of  Case Management at SCS
Karen knows the advocacy and determination that comes with having a child with many disabilities. She and George, her 18-year-old son, have faced more uncertainty than most. They lived for 21 months at a hotel while waiting for City of Ottawa affordable housing after her marriage ended. Karen and George have now found stability and support.

“I am me and I am George,” Says Karen. “I am his advocate.”
George was in and out of hospital for the first 12 years of his life. He is on the autism spectrum with complex medical needs and a profound mental disability. He’s non-verbal.

2017-2018 Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Initiative
SCS is the agency selected to manage the application and allocation process in Ottawa for the 2017-2018 Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Initiative. We are provided $142,500 to be allocated directly to families for children with a diagnosis of ASD/PDD to assist them with their respite needs. Together with our colleagues across the region, an application process was developed to allocate the fund. The initiative targets individuals meeting the ASD criteria, aged 0 to 17 years (up to the 18th birthday).

PATHWAYS to COMMUNITY,
by Al Condeluci

We all want a better community where all people have great opportunities and lifestyles of their choice. Yet, many of the vulnerable people served in the system are in isolated situations. This presentation takes a close look at the reasons why these struggles have existed and offers a community building perspective designed to shift the culture to be more inclusive and supportive to all people.

For the past 43 years Al has been associated with CLASS, a full service non-profit organization supporting people with disabilities, where he currently serves as Chief Executive Officer. He has been particularly active in looking at best practice aspects in disability services and the shift from micro services to macro approaches.

LifeShare Program

Through LifeShare, Ontario families and citizens (home providers) can offer a safe and nurturing environment for adults with developmental disabilities (home sharers).

LifeShare (also known as host family) is so much more than providing a room in your home. Being a home provider means you’re giving someone with a developmental disability “a place in your heart, a place in your home.”

People with developmental disabilities are active participants in their communities. They can be athletes, artists, employees, advocates, community volunteers, neighbours and friends. They’re an important part of the community and contribute to the strength of our province.

LifeShare helps adults with developmental disabilities who are 18 and older live as independently as possible in their communities.
